»Your new born child
At birth every baby is a perfect swimmer. For nine months he has lived in the fluid of the womb. The difference between being in the womb and being in the water after birth is the need for breathing. Early swimming lessons can teach your baby how to relax and enjoy being in the water. In this process, they also develop balance, co-ordination and strength. By the time they are approximately two years old your child will be able to swim. No two children develop in exactly the same way at exactly the same rate. Each child should be permitted to develop at his own pace, in accordance with his own capabilities.

»When should your baby start learning to swim?
It is necessary to restrict your young baby to the bathtub at home for his first lessons. Here you can control the temperature of the water. Babies lose body heat at a much faster rate than older children and adults. As a baby gets older he gains weight and is less affected by cold. Then he is ready for the transfer to the pool.

Lessons are best begun at home when a baby is about 2 or 3 weeks old. One of the best ways is to encourage them to play in the bath at home. Pouring out water over the baby and yourself using lots of different containers such as jugs, plastic bottles and watering cans. Show your baby how to blow bubbles in the water. Also lie your baby on their front stretched out with their chin on the water, and with your hand supporting him. Hold on to your baby’s legs and practise kicking their legs. Singing songs and saying nursery rhymes will make this even more fun. Having fun in the bath will do a lot to help your baby feel good in the water and get your child ready for doing more later.

Be careful, as progress should be slow, steady and sure. If you see a new step you introduce is making your baby uneasy, do not force him on, but go back over some particular work you have already covered which he enjoys. Never attempt to introduce too much new material in any one lesson.

A new movement should not be practised more than twice at the initial lesson. Don’t rush your baby, but concentrate on keeping him comfortable and happy at all times. Always, when teaching your baby accentuate the positive and ignore the negative. When your baby tries to do what you are showing him, compliment him on his effort, not on the final result. If you encourage him, you will eventually achieve the result you want. If you discourage him, he will lose heart and stop trying. Most children are naturally adventurous, and any child learning to swim will at some time wander into water that is too deep for him. He must be returned to the shallow water without being given a fright in the process. So, until your child is a capable swimmer, you must be in the water with him. You have to explain to your child, which part of the water is deep and which part is shallow, but you must not make the deep water a frightening thing. Children can learn anything through playing, and their achievement can give you a tremendous satisfaction.

»Who are the best teachers?
A child learning to swim must be comfortable and relaxed. When the parent/child relationship is good both teaching and learning becomes fun. The best teachers for children are their own parents. But particular care has to be taken when the parent fears the water. There is a great risk of passing the fear onto the baby. If you are one of those parents, you would do well to tackle the problem by learning to swim yourself as well as your child. You will overcome your own fear while your child is still a confident baby and not pass it on to your child.

»From two to three years.
From six months of age you can take your baby to the pool. This is the right age to start our water babies and parent & toddler swimming programme. During these lessons you will be shown how to help your child with his/her swimming and your child will learn how to swim and survive in the water.
And last but not least the lessons are full of fun and you’ll meet lots of other new parents.
